Chelsea have revealed that David Luiz will be unavailable for this week's Champions League match against FC Basel, citing a knee injury as his reason for absence.According to the club's official website, the Brazilian has bruised his patella and will be out of action for a week, joining Marco van Ginkel on the injured list.
Luiz started in the Blues' first two European fixtures of the campaign but has slipped further and further from the starting XI in recent weeks.
The 26-year-old has played just seven minutes in his side's last two Champions League outings, per Transfermarkt.co.uk, Jose Mourinho not needing his input for back-to-back wins over Schalke.
The same announcement says that Fernando Torres has travelled to Switzerland with the squad after recovering from his injury.
Luiz's absence won't make much of a difference to Mourinho's squad, the Portuguese having opted for a centre-back partnership of John Terry and Gary Cahill of late.
Instead, Luiz has played in just five of his side's 12 league outings this season but played in all 180 minutes of their Capital One Cup tournament thus far.
The Daily Mail's Rob Shepherd recently reported that Luiz will be moving on in January. Chelsea are supposedly ready to cash in on his signature after rejecting a raft of interest in past transfer windows.
If, as Chelsea's announcement suggests, Luiz is out for a week, he'll be unavailable for this weekend's fixture against Southampton but could then return for the following midweek match with Sunderland.
Bleacher Report will bring updates on Luiz's knee injury as they become available.
