Fernando Torres believes Chelsea can win 'everything' this season with firepower of new striker Samuel Eto'o
Fernando Torres has played down rumours that he is unsettled and has insisted that he is good friends with striking rival Samuel Eto'o and the other Chelsea forwards at the club, and has set his sights on winning "everything" this season.
The Spanish international, who started on the bench in Saturday's 1-0 defeat
to Everton
at Goodison Park behind Cameroonian Eto'o, thinks that Chelsea's
latest signing is "one of the best strikers in the world".
Jose Mourinho signed Eto’o from Anzhi Makhachkala last month and chose him
ahead of Torres and Demba Ba in the first game after the international break
at Goodison Park – a shock given that Eto’o only trained for a few days with
his new team-mates.
Torres, who scored in the team’s last game, versus Bayern Munich in their
unsuccessful UEFA Super Cup campaign, came on as a substitute in the second
half of the defeat to Everton while Eto'o, 32, was far from sharp on his
club debut, wasting a number of gilt-edged chances.
“There is now more competition up front but Demba, Samuel and me are not
enemies, we are friends," Torres, a £50-million signing from Liverpool
in January 2011, said. "We are team-mates and are fighting for the same
targets. I think it’s really good for the team.
“Eto’o is one of the best strikers I have ever seen. I played against him in
Spain many times and you can see the record he had there with Real Mallorca
and Barcelona, as well as in Inter.
“I am sure he is going to really enjoy this period of his career with Chelsea.
He is training really well, I wish him all the best and will help him in
every way that I can.”
Despite losing to Everton 29-year-old Torres is confident Chelsea can dominate at home and abroad this season, and when quizzed about his targets for the season, he said he wants “to win everything".
He added: "That can be realistic because we have a great squad. We have to think positive.
“Having players who can regain the ball and be really quick is one of the big qualities we have this season in our squad. We have those type of players up front and on the wings.
“That is good for us to play in the space behind. The main thing is to take it step by step, score goals, work for the team and do well when we have the chance and win a trophy."
