Wayne Rooney's stellar performance in Manchester United's 5-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League helped propel his club to victory on Wednesday.

Rooney, who is known for his ability to find the back of the net, actually aided his teammates in scoring goals during the blowout win over Bayer Leverkusen.

The English star notched two assists in the match, one in the 22nd minute while the other came in the 77th minute to add to an already insurmountable Manchester United lead.


Rooney's first helper came on the first goal of the game that proved to be all his squad needed to win.
Rooney set up Antonio Valencia for the score in what was a dazzling play, to say the least. Rooney's cross was a beauty, and it set up the easy opportunity for Valencia, who subsequently guided the ball into the net with a sliding finish that grabbed early momentum for Manchester United.

His second assist didn't loom as large, as Manchester United was already up 3-0 and had the game well in hand before Rooney struck again with a missed shot that found Chris Smalling close to the net for the ultimate finish.

You can even argue Rooney deserved a third assist in the contest after his free-kick found Bayer Leverkusen's Emir Spahic, which resulted in the defender netting one in his own goal in the 30th minute that gave Manchester United a 2-0 lead.

This latest performance for Rooney showed just how much of an effect he can have on a match without scoring.

The kind of respect Rooney commands can often unlock opposing defenses and enable his teammates to have enough room to find the back of the net. Also, his blistering shots on net may not always be successful or accurate, but they make things happen nonetheless, as was the case in this match.

It shouldn't be much of a surprise that Rooney is contributing in other ways than scoring. The 28-year-old has scored eight goals and matched that with eight assists in total in his contests with Manchester United in the 2013-14 campaign thus far.
With the win, Rooney's club secured its spot in the final 16 teams of the Champions League and are marching closer to greatness.
