Former Spurs chairman Alan Sugar baffled by tactics of Andre Villas-Boas
The businessman and die-hard Tottenham fan admits he has been nonplussed by the system employed by the London side
Former Tottenham chairman Alan Sugar claims he has been left baffled by the tactics of manager Andre Villas-Boas.
Lord Sugar, who sold his majority shareholding in the White Hart Lane club in 2001, said: “I’ve struggled to understand AVB’s tactics. You have wondered how we are going to get a goal.
“Four, five or even six games before the 6-0 defeat to Man City you couldn’t see where the goals were coming from.
“I am no great football expert, but the formation that AVB plays, I don’t understand it at all. You bring six, seven, eight new players that have just come from abroad and you have got to give them time to settle in, obviously.
"They have got to understand the culture and all that stuff. You can’t just chuck them in. I don’t get it.
“Daniel Levy did a very good deal with Gareth Bale and Spurs have gone out and spent money, but I wonder if it is just spending for the sake of it.
“Maybe we should have sat back and been selective, a bit like Arsene Wenger at Arsenal. We had £90million or whatever it was come in for Bale and the boss was promised that all the money would be available to spend on players, but you don’t have to spend it straight away.”
Sugar said he would love to see ex-Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson come out of retirement and manage Spurs.
In response to his Fergie call, AVB replied: “I think it is fair with the record he has – he will be a pretty good manager in every club in the world.”
