Roy Hodgson warns players that nobody's place is guaranteed for Brazil
ROY HODGSON has told his World Cup hopefuls it’s time to stand up and be counted.
But he admits those who fail to impress won’t be on the plane heading to Rio next summer.
England have just three more games – starting with tonight’s friendly against Chile at Wembley – before the preliminary World Cup squad is announced.
Hodgson has warned his stars that there will be no second chances for those that fluff their lines.
And he has revealed that he is already assessing the chances of his next potential crop of new faces – including Wigan’s Callum McManaman .
Hodgson said: “The rehearsals can be as good as you like, but it’s when they step out on stage on the first night that it really counts.
“It’s going to be a big night for them if they get their chance and unfortunately if they do fail spectacularly and do really badly, it will be held against them. But I would like to think that I will make my judgments on these players not purely on their success or relative failure during the 90 minutes, but on what feeling I have got for them during these get-togethers and also what I see of them week in, week out in the Premier League.“The rehearsals can be as good as you like, but it’s when they step out on stage on the first night that it really counts”Roy Hodgson
One can bemoan as a national coach that you don’t have all the training sessions that a club coach has, but we do get an awful lot of chance to see the players and we do take it very seriously.
“I would like to think that, if a guy gets a chance, he’ll be good enough to take it and confirm that he deserves his place in the squad in the first place.
“I’ll also hope that I won’t make draconian judgments about them if they don’t have a particularly good game.’
Hodgson will name a provisional 30-man squad in March and admits he has no firm names on his list.
He added: “You know the reason I don’t do it?
“It’s a very simple reason – that so many things can happen between now and May.
"It's an interesting exercise and it’s fun to do. I’m sure we all do it but basically it’s an exercise with no meaning because before we went to the Euros, I lost Frank Lampard, Gareth Barry, Gary Cahill and John Ruddy.
“Who else did I lose? Kyle Walker. Wayne Rooney couldn’t play the first two games.
“We’ve got a few really on the fringes who haven’t played much who we will look at.
“Wigan’s Callum McManaman for example. He has only just got back from injury but we have been following his progress.
“I mention him as a player who burst on to the scene and unfortunately disappeared through no fault of his own. There are certain players like that who aren’t out of our radar.
“But I can’t honestly say I’ve got 18 names stamped down and I’ll only need another five, because I’d be lying. That’s not the case at all.”
