Moyes refuses to blast Young
Manchester United manager David Moyes has defended Ashley Young amid accusations that he went down too easily to earn a penalty in the goalless Champions League draw with Real Sociedad.
Young, a second half substitute, was awarded a penalty when he went down following a Markel Bergara challenge, but he has been widely criticised for making too much of the incident.
Moyes blasted Young after he was booked for simulation against Crystal Palace on September 14, but the manager was quick to defend his player following the final whistle.
"I have seen it and the boy certainly tugs him in the box," Moyes said. "If you look the referee is two yards away from it and decided to give it.
"All I know is he got a penalty kick from a decision, I don't know anything about reputations or anything.
"The referee was there. He made quite a lot of decisions tonight and that one he gave a penalty kick.
"The referee made decisions all night. He's the one who saw fit to award a penalty and send a player off. I thought the referee made the decision and that was the referee's choice."
Marouane Fellaini was sent off in the latter stages of the match after picking up a second yellow card, but Moyes believes his dismissal was harsh.
"It was the totting up [of tackles] that got him [Fellaini] sent off but I thought it was harsh. I thought there were some strange decisions all night. The crowd whistled an awful lot for things tonight," Moyes told ITV Sport.
"We had enough chances to win it, We controlled it for most of the game. It was there to take, to get into a strong position or even get clear in the group and we should have taken three points."
