The fee was claimed to be just £4 million, with the Reds claimed to be keen to cut ties with the stopper by The Express.Over the past 24 hours Pepe Reina has now come out and denied any such deal is in place.
"Barcelona? It is not true that my father signed for me for the Catalan club because at the end of year I will have to return to Liverpool as they have loaned me,” he said.
“Napoli? I am fine, it’s a great atmosphere, the fans are fantastic.”
The question at this point is, do Liverpool fans even care?
Now it may seem a little harsh to phrase it like that, it certainly does writing it - but all Liverpool fans have heard regarding Reina for months is repeated on-off links with the Spanish champions, that such a deal eventually seems inevitable.
Barcelona vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu confirmed today: "Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and Pepe Reina are within our range of options, which is already very small.”
Liverpool have moved on, via their summer acquisition of Simon Mignolet who has been an assured and error-free figure between the sticks, unlike Reina's last season at Anfield.
It looks at this point as though Reina will never play for Liverpool again, and his move to Napoli on loan was engineered as a time filler until Victor Valdes' Barcelona contract expires next summer.
We are sure like any transfer saga this has a few twists and turns to come, but right now it just seems so detached from Liverpool as a priority that we wonder if fans have already begun to sever the emotional ties to the player and stopped paying attention to the circus?
What do you think about Reina's future?
