Official: Chelsea confirm that Brazilian star will miss Champions League clash with Basel but Torres returns
There is some bad news for Chelsea ahead of their Champions League clash with FC Basel as defender David Luiz is ruled out with a knee injury, reports Sky Sports.
Luiz didn’t feature in the Premier League clash with West Ham United at the weekend either and manager Jose Mourinho is likely to stick with the central defensive partnership of Gary Cahill and John Terry.
The Brazil international has been on the fringes of the Blues first team this term and has made 10 starts in all competitions.
Mourinho has preferred the combination of Cahill and Terry at the back for the most part and the 26-year-old has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge as a result.
There is some good news for the west London club however as Fernando Torres is back training with the squad and is in line for a recall.
Torres hasn’t played since early November when the club were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle United and will be looking to get back into the starting XI as soon as possible.
Although the Spain international is far from showing the form form the forward’s Liverpool days, the 29-year-old has found the net on five occasions this season – including scoring the winner in a Man of the Match performance against Manchester City.
If Mourinho’s men can beat Basel on Tuesday then they will take a huge step towards the last-16 of the competition, although that’s easier said then done considering the Swiss champions inflicted a 1-2 defeat on the side in their opening fixture.
