Manchester United line up Marco Reus and Shinji Kagawa swap deal claim The Times

Manchester United are interested in a swap deal for Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus that would see Shinji Kagawa go in the opposite direction, according to The Times.

James Ducker, a reputable source when it comes to United news, claims United have scouted the German midfielder and believes that the free scoring 24-year-old could make the move to Old Trafford with Kagawa going back to Germany as part of the deal.

Dortmund earlier confirmed that Reus had a release clause in his contract and while Dortmund executive Hans-Joachim Watzke didn’t specify an amount, Ducker speculates it is €35 million.



Reus is one of the brightest prospects in German football and has flourished since he returned to Dortmund in 2012 after Kagawa’s departure. Last season, he scored 19 goals in all competitions and this year he has already bagged ten as he has continued where he left off last year.

Crucially from a United perspective, Reus is comfortable playing on the wing and has the necessary pace to play out wide whereas Kagawa has struggled in that position as it doesn’t suit his natural game. In that respect, he would be the perfect player United need right now with our wingers still struggling to find any sort of consistency.

Jurgen Klopp has been on a Kagawa charm offensive all year long and from an outside perspective, why would Dortmund confirm that Reus had a release clause if they weren’t interested in entertaining the prospect of selling him? There is plenty of logic behind the possibility of this transfer but equally so, it would be a very big surprise if Dortmund were to let Reus leave given how highly regarded he is in German football.

But Dortmund have lost the likes of Nuri Sahin, Mario Gotze, Shinji Kagawa and the soon to be departed Robert Lewandowski for a variety of reasons. They are a club who have recovered from near financial ruin but one that still cannot compete with the financial powerhouses of European football and that could play to the advantage of United if David Moyes wanted to make a move.
