England's Roy Hodgson takes the blame as his gamble against Chile ends unbeaten run
"I ran a risk with the debuts that it would go our way. It
didn't. I have to accept responsibility" says boss after new-look side
loses
Roy Hodgson admits his England "risk" backfired as his rookies found red hot Chile better.
Hodgson had given Southampton rising stars Jay Rodriguez and Adam Lallana and Celtic keeper Fraser Forster their debuts for the Three Lions.
But Barcelona superstar Alexis Sanchez headed a seventh-minute opener and added a stylish stoppage-time second to seal a 2-0 win and end the Three Lions' 10-match unbeaten run.
England boss Hodgson said: "I took a chance and ran a risk with the debuts that it would go our way. It didn't. I have to accept that responsibility."
But Hodgson refused to condemn the fans who booed the team off at full time - after the public had called for younger players to replace the old guard.
He added: "That's part of the game today. Fans don't accept defeats or want them. Who does? We don't want them either. But there aren't many games I see played today where the home team has lost and there isn't some sort of booing.
"I'll not criticise our fans. They were disappointed that we couldn't keep our momentum and performances going, so they're entitled to show their frustration. But they'll show a measure of perspective.
"Forster didn't have many saves. He made a quite good one in the first half. Was chanceless with both of the goals.
"Lallana did well. Rodriguez worked hard, did all the right things, but it was a big ask for him to play in that position.
"But I'm not disappointed with any of them and I'd not write any of them off on the basis of that game."
Hodgson admitted a more experienced line-up will have the job of lifting the nation's morale against Germany on Tuesday.
He went on: "Joe Hart will start the game against Germany. As will the bulk of the players who have been playing in qualifying and didn't play. They will play on Tuesday if fit.
"There will be a lot of players on Tuesday who didn't play tonight, so should be fresh. Hopefully, having watched the game, they'll be aware of how important it will be to give a good performance."
England defender Phil Jones picked up a groin injury and may not be fit for Tuesday.
The result means England have not beaten Chile for 60 years, and also extends the South Americans' impressive undefeated run to 13 games.
Boss Jorge Sampaio later tipped Sanchez to become one of the stars of next summer's World Cup.
He said: "When you come here, to the Cathedral of Football, it's a great day to make the Chilean people happy.
"In the hierarchy of the game's top players a performance like that from Sanchez stands him in good stead to have a good tournament at the World Cup."
Before the match, England's captain-for-the-night Frank Lampard was presented with a special Golden Cap to mark his 103rd England appearance.
The presentation was made by Lampard's father Frank Snr and 1966 World Cup Final hero Sir Geoff Hurst.
