Eleme win Rivers Governor’s Cup
Eleme
on Friday emerged as the champions of the 2013 Rivers State Governor’s
Cup after defeating 10-man Bonny side 5-3 on penalties at the Liberation
Stadium in Port Harcourt.
The competition, sponsored by Shell Petroleum Development Company, was organised to develop grass-roots football in the state.
The Friday’s final was witnessed by
former Nigeria managers Christian Chukwu and Monday Sinclair. Other
football managers at the event included former Nigeria defender and
coach of Abia Warriors, Emeka Ezeugo, Sharks coach Gbenga Ogunbote and
Dolphins coach Stanley Eguma.
Tamuno Koko who was later sent off on
accumulated yellow card offence scored Bonny opening goal while Onwuka
Ebube restored parity for his side, Eleme ending first term on 1-1.
Earlier in the day, Khana defeated Okrika 2-1 in the losers’ final.
The captain of Eleme, Adams Sunday said
he knew from the quarter-final stage that his side would this year’s
edition of the competition.
He said, “We started the title campaign
not quite convincingly but after we survived the scare of Opobo/Nkoro in
the quarterfinals, it dawned on us that just a little more push would
see us win our first title of the competition.”
