AVB To Move For Chelsea & Man Utd Target If He Fails To Land Portuguese Defender
Although the summer transfer
window is officially closed that doesn’t stop clubs working hard behind
the scenes to prepare for future signings, so we’ll keep you up-to-date
with all the latest gossip. Today, Spurs will move for Luke Shaw if they can’t land Fabio Coentrao.
Tottenham Hotspur boss Andre Villas-Boas will move for Chelsea and Manchester United target Luke Shaw if he fails to land Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao in January, according to the Express.
Spurs are currently short of cover on
the left side of their defence with Danny Rose the only recognised
senior left-back in the squad, and Jan Vertonghen has been forced to
fill in during recent games while Rose has been on the sidelines with a
foot injury.
It seems Villas-Boas is keen to strengthen his options when the transfer window re-opens in January with the Express claiming he will revive his interest in Madrid’s Coentrao this winter after failing to land him in the summer.
Coentrao has failed to oust Marcelo from Carlo Ancelotti’s starting eleven this season and could be open to a move with the World Cup just around the corner, but it remains to be seen whether the Madrid hierarchy will agree to sell mid-season.
Should AVB fail for a second time to
sign the Portuguese defender, the newspaper claims he will then turn his
attention to Southampton’s highly-rated youngster Shaw – who’s also
attracted interest from Chelsea and Manchester United.
Shaw has been hugely impressive for the
Saints since breaking into the first team 18 months ago and is being
talked about as a future England regular. However, manager Mauricio
Pochettino will understandably be desperate to hang on to his starlet
and the report suggests the south coast club will demand in excess of
£10m for his services should a ‘big’ club come calling.
Spurs have previously dealt with
Southampton having splashed £10m on Gareth Bale and Shaw’s signing is
likely to appeal more to chairman Daniel Levy due to his potential
sell-on value, so we could see the north Londoners make a push for the
18-year-old when the window opens. But will Chelsea or United contest
his signature? We’ll have to wait and see…
