400 wrestlers for Gov. Dickson Cup
The
maiden edition of the Governor Seriake Dickson’s Wrestling Cup will
hold from November 24 to 20 in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, organisers of the
event have said.
The competition, holding for the first
time in Dickson’s administration, is expected to attract no fewer than
400 wrestlers from 30 states and eight sports club.
The organisers said invitations had been sent to states teams and the other participants expected at the championship.
President of the Nigeria Wrestling
Federation Daniel Igali said the competition would play an important
part on Nigeria’s preparation for major tournaments next year.
“The governor played an important role in
seeing that wrestling returns to the Olympics. He assisted Nigeria in
making a presentation at the International Olympic Committee meeting in
Buenos Aires, Argentina where I argued for the sport to return to the
Games,” Igali said.
“He has assisted the sport to develop in
Nigeria and we’re hoping that this year’s competition will produce
champions worthy of representing Nigeria at the international
championships lined up next year.”
