UPDC Ikoyi Club Grand Slam serves off
The
third edition of the Ikoyi Club tennis Grand Slam sponsored by UPDC Plc
served off on Monday with preliminary matches involving over 60
players.
Players will compete in the singles and doubles events.
The competition, which will end on
Saturday, is being organised to give members of the tennis section of
the club the opportunity to express themselves and display their skills
in the sport.
The chairman of the tennis section, Billy
Ekwunife, said the competition was tagged a Grand Slam because of it
competitive nature.
“It is organised towards the end of the
year after every other major competitions, and it will feature seeded
and unseeded players,” Ekwunife said.
“Our desire is to have the competition become a bigger ever in the future hence the name Grand Slam.”
The managing director of UPDC Plc, Hakeem
Oguniran, said the company decided to partner with the club in order to
promote the spirit of harmony among the club members.
“We don’t just sell houses, we sell lifestyles and hope to improve this among Nigerians,” Oguniran said.
Ekwunife said the winner of the competition will get N500,000, while the first runner-up will get N400,000.
