Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho’s influence on boardroom decisions at other clubs is growing.

Mourinho is following in the footsteps of former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, dubbed ‘The Godfather’ by the Portuguese, who in the past often picked up the phone to nudge a chairman in the direction of one of his favoured brethren.

Now Mourinho has inherited the same persuasive manner and pointed Middlesbrough in the direction of his former Real Madrid assistant Aitkor Karanka when they were searching for a successor to Tony Mowbray.

Mourinho also helped broker Mauricio Pochettino’s shock move to Southampton after being impressed with the Argentinian’s work at Espanyol.
