Fulham defender Sascha Riether has been charged by the FA for violent
conduct after he appeared to stamp on Manchester United’s Adnan
Januzaj.

The incident, which occurred in United’s 3-1 victory at Craven Cottage on Saturday, could become a landmark one as Riether has become the first player to be charged retrospectively by the FA as part of a new pilot project for potential ‘not seen’ incidents that occur during Premier League matches.
Riether’s alleged stamp during stoppage time of the match was not seen by officials it at the time but it was caught on video.
A statement on the FA’s official website read: “Previously, where the match officials had confirmed to the FA that none of them had seen an incident, the match referee was then asked to review all available video evidence before being asked what action, if any, he would have taken had it been seen.
“Under the new process, if an incident has not been seen by the match officials, a three-man panel of former elite referees Steve Dunn, Eddie Wolstenholme and Alan Wiley will be asked by the FA to review it and advise what, if any action, they believe the match referee should have taken had it been witnessed at the time.
“For an FA charge to follow, all three panel members must agree it is a sending-off offence. In this [Riether’s] instance, the panel were of the unanimous decision that it was an act of violent conduct.”
Riether now has until 1800 BST on Tuesday to respond to the charge.
United manager David Moyes earlier on Monday called for more protection for Januzaj, saying: "Adnan is going to need a little bit of protection or we are going to find that he is getting kicked up and down. I do think he deserves a little bit more than he is getting at this present time."
"We have spoken to him about it. He gets kicked up and down in training every day. But he gets up. Adnan has learned from the good professionals that he has got to get on with it and accept it.
"He only needs to look at Lionel Messi, who is probably the best in the world at getting kicked, getting up and getting on with it and continually producing magic all the time.
"I am not in any way comparing him to Lionel Messi but I am saying we hope the way he gets up after he has been kicked is the way Adnan continues to behave."
