The collapse of Coentrao's move summed up a difficult summer transfer window for David Moyes.
Marouane Fellaini's £27.5m transfer from Everton represented Moyes' only significant deal since taking over as United manager.
A move for Leighton Baines failed to materialise, after a joint bid to take Fellaini and Baines was rejected by new Toffees boss Roberto Martinez and chairman Bill Kenwright.
