Chelsea: Mourinho set for Abramovich talks
While pleased with the club’s league position – the Blues are second with seven points from three games – Abramovich has been taken aback by Mourinho’s defensive style.
The billionaire Russian has always favoured an attractive, attacking style and thought he would receive that once more with Mourinho in charge.
However, those concerns came to a head when the Portuguese fielded a team without a striker against Manchester United.
The game ended 0-0, and many suggested the Portuguese set out to take a point rather than all three, away from Old Trafford.
Chelsea also took their foot off the gas on the opening day, as they beat Hull City 2-0.
With the game won, the Blues eased off and saw out the rest of the game with minimal fuss.
They also squeezed past Aston Villa, but Abramovich was offered encouragement by the club’s swashbuckling display against Bayern Munich in the Super Cup – despite their penalty shootout defeat.
Now, with a clash with Everton looming, Abramovich is keen to talk with Mourinho about his vision for the team in the coming months.
Juan Mata will also be a topic of discussion.
The Spaniard, the club’s Player of the Season for the last two years, was linked with a move away from the club in the summer after struggling to break into the first-team under Mourinho – with Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain both believed to be interested.
He has blamed his first-team struggles on injury, but Abramovich is keen to find out if the 25-year-old is seen as integral to his manager’s plans.
Mourinho currently has an embarrassment of riches available to him in the attacking midfield position, with Oscar, Willian, Kevin De Bruyne, Marco van Ginkel and Andre Schurrle all battling with Mata for a first-team spot.
However, Mata is a player Abramovich rates highly, and he is set to ask Mourinho if the player will be featuring on a regular basis following his ‘injury’ return.
