Bill Clinton, Lauds Serena Williams on Winning Her 17th Grand Slam Title.
The 31-year-old American overcame Victoria Azarenka of Belarus to clinch her fifth US Open title in a thrilling final at Flushing Meadows, New York on Sunday.
The victory, which is her third Grand Slam title of 2013, also meant the 31-year-old has clinched her 17th Grand Slam finals title, one short of Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert, and seven short of Margaret Court’s record total of 24.
Clinton, who was speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live said: “She (Serena) always wanted to be someone who opened up new avenues for girls and women and she was ab le to play highly competitive, high concentration tennis, win but always be concerned about why she was really doing it.”
