Ex-Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson named as scariest potential father-in-law in new poll
Would you want to ask for his daughter's hand in marriage? Not according to this survey
Who would you fancy as your new father-in-law? Well not Sir Alex Ferguson, according to a new survey.
The scary Scot topped a poll for the person men would least like to ask permission to marry their offspring - narrowly beating off a challenge from Newsnight's attack dog Jeremy Paxman.
Those taking part in the survey - conducted by www.comparejewellery.com as part of research into the marriage proposals of Britons - were asked: “Which celebrity(s) would you consider to be the scariest hypothetical in-laws, based on those you would find most intimidating when having to ask for their offspring’s hand in marriage?”
The celebrities in question did not have to have children, but the poll focused on how intimidating people felt the stars would be in such a scenario - former Manchester United boss Ferguson, famous for his hairdryer and being able to keep time better than any sports person in history, came out on top.
The 71-year-old retired this summer after just over 26 years in charge at Old Trafford and 13 Premier League titles.
His reputation for being the alpha-male obviously preceded him as he polled 36% of votes, beating BBC man Jeremy Paxman into second place and boxer David Haye into third.
The most feared potential mother-in-law was Katie Hopkins, she of doesn't like "geographical location names" and Apprentice fame.
"It seems that those prone to a public spat, like Katie Hopkins and Sir Alex, are definitely feared amongst the general public; and no one would want to dare ask for their offspring’s hand in marriage in a hypothetical scenario," said Ali O’Neill of comparejewellery.com.
"Like many, their bark is probably worse than their bite, but I don’t think that anyone would want to upset David Haye!"
