Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry has become Everton's third signing on the final day of the transfer window after he joined on a season-long loan.

Wigan midfielder James McCarthy has joined on a permanent deal and Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku made a loan move to Goodison Park.

But, with Marouane Fellaini completing a £27.5million move to Manchester United, Everton boss Roberto Martinez has moved to bolster his options in the middle of the park by taking England international Barry on a temporary deal.

The move was not finalised until close to the 11pm deadline, with City apparently keen to secure a transfer fee for him.

They have relented, although it is not clear how much of Barry's wages Everton will be liable for.
