Top Gunner! Arsenal smash club record to sign Mesut Ozil for £42.5m from Real Madrid
The German international has signed for the Gunners on a five-year
deal after the club were forced to respond to pressure from various
quarters to dust off the cheque book.
There had been rumblings that Tottenham were biding their time in the sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid in an attempt to halt Arsenal’s pursuit of the Spanish club’s dispensable talent.
But Bale’s deadline day move has not prevented the German midfielder from completing his record-breaking switch to Emirates Stadium.
The 24-year-old was delighted with the move stating that he would repay 'the 100 per cent faith' shown in him by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.
Ozil earned his move to Real Madrid from Werder Bremen in 2010 after a string of impressive performances at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa confirmed him as one of Europe’s top young talents.
This is not the first time that Arsene Wenger has registered an interest in the German international; the Arsenal boss pursued Ozil ahead of his move to Real Madrid but fell foul of interest from the Spanish giants.
The midfielder’s career at the Bernabeu – which cam following a £12 million move – proved fruitful in his second season when he coupled the La Liga crown with a Spanish Cup medal.
Ozil continued his success on the international stage when his displays at Euro 2012 were rewarded with a place in UEFA’s team of the tournament.
But after 155 appearances for Real Madrid, Ozil has been sacrificed to make way for the incoming Gareth Bale.
