The Premier League champions, who are listed on the New York Stock Exchange, racked up nearly £400m worth of debt despite lifting the Premier League title last season.

Figures showed commercial revenues shot up by nearly 30% to £152.5million thanks in part to deals with partners like Nike.

More significantly, broadcasting revenues were down to £101.6m which was due to the fact they crashed out of the group stages last season.

Interestingly, United had to pay out nearly £6m in compensation after dispensing with the services of assistant coaches Mike Phelan and Rene Meulensteen.

The compensation fell under exceptional items category, and for the fourth quarter they were £2.3m compared with £4.4m in the prior year quarter.

United enjoyed a winning start in the Champions League last night, after beating Bayer Leverkusen 4-2.
