Chelsea without goalscorer for the rest of the season
Romelu Lukaku showed Jose Mourinho and Chelsea what they are missing with the winning goal for Everton at Upton Park on Saturday, and while Chelsea struggled for goals against Fulham, the Daily Mail have revealed the Belgian forward has no call-back-clause in his contract.
The powerful striker completed a surprising deadline day switch to Goodison Park, with many Chelsea fans expecting him to play a starring role at Stamford Bridge this season.
Instead, Mourinho opted to bring in 32-year-old Samuel Eto’o, who is yet to score in his first three appearances for his new club, while Fernando Torres and Demba Ba are still awaiting their first league goal of the season.
The decision was all the more surprising considering Lukaku scored 17 goals while on loan at West Brom last season, and it has now been revealed Mourinho cannot call the 20-year-old back from his loan spell until next season, with his contract detailing he will be at Everton until the end of the season at least.
Asked about the Lukaku situation after the 2-0 win over Fulham, Mourinho said: “Lukaku is good at Everton. If he’s going to play every game, it’s good for his future at Chelsea.”
Lukaku scored his first goal in Everton colours on Saturday, although he didn’t know much about it after getting knocked out in the process.
Lukaku said after the match: “I remember nothing about it. I did not even know I had scored, that was the first thing I asked the doc. I said, ‘Who scored?’ He said, ‘You.’”
