The Portuguese tactician leaves White Hart Lane with the club lying seventh in the Premier League table, eight points adrift of league leaders Arsenal and five points outside the top four.
The defeat to the Reds was the final straw, with Villas-Boas having come under increasing pressure after an indifferent start to the season which included a 6-0 hammering at the hands of Manchester City.
"The club can announce that agreement has been reached with head coach, Andre Villas-Boas, for the termination of his services," a statement from Tottenham read.
"The decision was by mutual consent and in the interests of all parties.
"We wish Andre well for the future.
"We shall make a further announcement in due course."
Villas-Boas joined in the club in 2012 following the dismissal of Harry Redknapp and led Spurs to a credible fifth place in the league last season.
However, with star man Gareth Bale sold to Real Madrid, the current campaign was always going to be a different matter.
Villas-Boas was given more than £100million to spend during the summer transfer window but despite a raft of new signings, the Lillywhites have failed to fire and as a result their manager has paid the ultimate price.
