Leon wins Liga MX Apertura title

America's quest for back-to-back titles and a record 12th Mexican league championship ended Sunday night, as a rampant Leon clinched Mexico's title.
Leon defeated Club America 3-1 on Sunday evening, clinching the Liga MX Apertura championship with a 5-1 aggregate victory.

America was seeking its record 12th Liga MX title, but it was denied by a ruthless Leon side which clinched its sixth Mexican league title, and first since 1992.

Carrying a 2-0 lead from Thursday's first leg, Leon grabbed a killer third goal from Mauro Boselli in the 13th minute. It was the ninth goal in seven games for the in-form Argentine.

America grabbed a lifeline just before the half, as Nacho Gonzalez turned into his own net to reduce the deficit to two goals at halftime, and leave all to play for in the second half.

As American pushed for a second goal, Gonzalez made amends for his own goal seven minutes into the second half, as his strike all but ended the tie as a contest. With just over 15 minutes to play, Edwin Hernandez put the gloss on the result with a third goal.

In his final match as America head coach before leaving to take the Mexico job full time, Miguel Herrera was sent off America's bench for arguing with the official, ending an extremely successful run for the former Mexico national team defender.
