Rumour Mill: Chelsea eye Draxler and Hulk, Reds to go Greek
Tottenham Hotspur sack Andre Villas-Boas
LIKE a Hollywood sci-fi film, Andre Villas-Boas's sacking
could alter the course of history. Players that were destined for one
club could now find themselves somewhere completely different. This
mind-bending madness that could only be the Rumour Mill.
ALL JOSE WANTS FOR CHRISTMASGerman wunderkind Julian Draxler. The Schalke attacking midfielder has been attracting all kinds of admiring glances and flattery from the Premier League's big guns recently, and TalkSport reports that Chelsea is leading the chase, offering a big bag of cash with out-of-favour Kevin de Bruyne stuffed in there for good measure.
But with a midfield looking more stuffed than a Christmas turkey, Jose Mourinho's priority looks to be a striker - and he's a big 'un. Brazil international Hulk is said to be looking for a way out of Russian club Zenit St Petersburg following his $70m move from Porto and Chelsea has a longstanding interest in the 27-year-old, who's scored 23 goals in all competitions this season.
REDS GO GREEK?
Perhaps with a hint of fear of some fat-walleted Spaniard taking off with Luis Suarez, Brendan Rodgers is said to looking for alternative attacking options for Liverpool with Greece striker Konstantinos Mitroglou on his shopping list.
The Liverpool Echo reports the powerful centre-forward is no direct replacement but would add more strength up front and would be a snip at around $13m.
The Reds could also be creating some space at the back, with former boss Rafael Benitez sniffing at defender Daniel Agger like an overly familiar dog, according to The Guardian. Agger, Liverpool's vice-captain, has struggled for game-time under Rodgers and even lost the armband to Luis Suarez ahead of the Tottenham thrashing.
Agger has often repeated his commitment to Liverpool but the chance to link up with Benitez on a short-term loan deal could be tempting.
MOYES'S MIDFIELD MINEFIELD
Manchester United's pre-season transfer woes have been much discussed and given David Moyes's nightmare season, it's not surprising there is so much gossip surrounding Old Trafford.
Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport reports Moyes is staring intently at Inter and Colombia midfielder Fredy Guarin, pensively fingering the $32m on his pocket and mouthing 'Javier Hernandez'.
But, like an unwanted Christmas present, Hernandez could also be offered in exchange for Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman or Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Alex Teixeira.
BEST OF THE REST
Dundee United's youngsters continue to attract interest from the Premier League. The Daily Mirror reports Everton boss Roberto Martinez wants left back Andrew Robertson to be the next Leighton Baines, while 'Scottish Messi' Ryan Gauld, a target for pretty much everyone, has extended his contract with The Terrors.
Fulham is ready to offload underwhelming Costa Rican midfielder Bryan Ruiz and bring back Clint Dempsey from MLS club Seattle Sounders.
PSG are thinking of trying Juventus's commitment to rising playmaker Paul Pogba, says the Daily Mail, which could see the likes of Blaise Matuidi, Ezequiel Lavezzi and the small, but very effective, Marco Verratti up for grabs.
West Ham continues to be linked with every player under the sun - today's its Southampton striker Rickie Lambert, Lorient defender Lamine Kone and Valencia striker Jonas.
Greece striker Georgios Samaras could be on his way to Hull after he was asked to take a pay cut by current club Celtic. The 29-year-old is out of contract in the summer and free to talk to clubs from January.
There's a heap to talk about in episode 10 of the Fox Football Podcast. Regulars Adam Peacock, Simon Hill and Brenton Speed are in the studio to talk about Perth's crisis, Harry Kewell's penalty failure, the upcoming Melbourne derby and are joined on the line by Adelaide United striker Bruce Djite to discuss a turbulent week at Coopers Stadium. Daniel Garb dials in as well from London, to run the rule over Andre Villas-Boas's sacking and the UEFA Champions League draw.
