Arsenal weekend round-up: Wilshere winner and Szczesny 'came back stronger'

Szczesny Training
All the latest news and gossip from the past couple of days at The Emirates.
Arsenal had a Jack Wilshere goal to thank for a share of the spoils in an end-to-end game that deserved no loser.

Wojciech Szczesny made an excellent save early on, but he had no chance with Claudio Yacob’s expertly placed downward header, his first goal for the club, with gave The Baggies the lead.

The second half started much the same, but when Tomas Rosicky stripped off to enter the fray everyone expected to see Wilshere’s number go up.

The England international was absolutely woeful in the first half. He was unable to keep the ball, find his man or do anything positive - with a late yellow card the cherry on top a dreary first-half cake.

But it was his half volley, with a deflection off of Jonas Olsson, which beat Boaz Myhill in the West Brom goal - and proved to be the final goal in a 1-1 draw.

Wojciech Szczesny has been speaking about his season so far, which has been a real turnaround from his difficult 2012-13.

“It was obviously tough but a very good lesson for me – one I really needed at the time. I felt more pressure, more desire to give it an extra ten per cent in training, to turn up early and show the boss I deserved to be back in goal. And that extra ten per cent made all the difference. When, as a manager, you have been in the job for a long time you know what to do. So I have learned from it, come back stronger and now I’m feeling good.”

Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira has stated his belief that Mesut Ozil will fire Arsenal to a Premier League title this season.

The two are close friends, and arrived in Madrid at the same time from German football.
And Khedira is in no doubt about the positive affect the former Werder Bremen playmaker will have on the Arsenal first-team:

‘’Arsenal had a strong team anyway, but Mesut makes them the best team in England. I am sure he can be the player that makes things happen for them and win them the championship.’’

Arsenal are being linked with a January move for Karim Benzema once again this morning. It is said thatThe Gunners and Chelsea are ready to pay up to £17 million for the French international - who is out of favour after a poor start to the campaign with Los Blancos.
