Liverpool are not Premier League title contenders, says Redknapp
Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp insists the Reds aren't Premier League title contenders this season
Jamie Redknapp has played down Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League title this season.
Brendan Rodgers’ men returned to the top of the table courtesy of a battling 2-2 draw with Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Monday night. The Reds are still to lose a top-flight game this season following 1-0 wins against Stoke City, Aston Villa and reigning champions Manchester United.
But Redknapp, who played for the Reds between 1990 and 2002, reckons Rodgers will be satisfied with a top-four finish this term before strengthening further next summer.
“I think it’s baby steps for Liverpool,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“If you offered Brendan Rodgers a top-four finish, Champions League football and the chance to attract world-class players now, he’d bite your hand off.
“They’ve had a brilliant start and they’ve carried it on from the end of last season and it’s important Brendan Rodgers keeps up that form and keeps people like Steven Gerrard fit. There’s no reason why they can’t finish in the top four.
He added: “I don’t see Liverpool as title winners this year, but honestly, everyone looks like they’re struggling a little bit at the moment. No team stands out.
“Arsenal have shown glimpses and so have Tottenham, Manchester United and Manchester City have struggled, whilst Chelsea lost at Everton last week. So, no-one is taking it by the scruff of the neck.”
