New Wigan manager Uwe Rosler is out to catch Maribor by surprise

UWE ROSLER is hoping his new Wigan side can follow his former club Manchester City and cause a surprise in Europe.

Though they did not come top of the group, City fought back from two goals down to beat European champions Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Rosler who was a cult hero during his time as a player at Maine Road, also needs the Latics to come from behind, despite looking set to exit the Europa League.
The Championship side need three points in Slovenia against Maribor tonight. But victory may not be enough to seal their progress to the last 32.

They also have to hope Belgian outfit Zulte Waregem lose at home to Rubin Kazan to ensure their place in the next stage. Rubin have already secured top spot in Group D so they are not expected to go to Belgium and try for a result, with a draw also enough for Zulte as they hold a better head-to-head record over Wigan.

There is also the sub-plot that tonight’s game will be Rosler’s first since replacing Owen Coyle as boss with a big Championship game to come on Sunday, against Bolton, which is also on the German’s mind. “City can inspire us,” said Rosler. “For English football that was very important and also for the club, as City will build confidence from that win.

“We are in a position now with an away game and it is still possible to achieve qualification.
“All our concentration should be on the game, because there is always hope. We came a long way here and we’ll give everything we have to win the game. Then we can only hope for the best.
“This is a real chance for all the players to prove themselves.”
WIGAN (probable): Carson; Shotton, Rogne, Perch, Crainey; McManaman, McArthur, Watson, Espinoza; Fortune, Powell.
Kick-off: 6pm.
