United prepare for big clear out that could see multiple players leave

David Moyes may have inherited a squad that won the Premier League last year but everybody knew that it was far from the best squad in the league and this year, it’s holes have been drastically exposed.

There was little chance of Moyes getting rid of many players in the last window because he didn’t know them well enough and wanted to give everybody the opportunity to prove themselves worthy of a place at Old Trafford. While some have stood up and accounted for themselves, others haven’t.

This is something that irked Peter Schmeichel who believes that there are five or six players at United who simply don’t care right now.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Schmeichel said: ”To be a Manchester United player, it requires a certain level of performance, mentality and you have got to be proud to be a Manchester United player. I just see with five or six players that they don’t care and we [United] have never ever had players that don’t care. You should care.

“It’s so obvious. Everyone is talking about it. Let’s say the club have 560 million supporters. If you are named in the first eleven, you carry the responsibility for 560million people’s wellbeing at that time. That’s a lot of people. There are 75,000 people there at Old Trafford every time you play a game.

‘This is what you have to understand when you are a Manchester United player – this is the kind of responsibility you have to take on the pitch. Certain players look like they don’t care and they should not be at Manchester United.”

United have an ageing squad with the likes of Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Carrick, Van Persie and Giggs all over 30, so change was always inevitable when Moyes arrived but the performances of many players this season simply hasn’t been strong enough.

I agree with Schmeichel and for me, the experienced players at the club are those at fault right. With an entire new management team, the changing room needed the experienced players to lead by example on and off the pitch – we haven’t seen that enough yet.
Last year, the changes to the management of Old Trafford were vast and widespread. You get the feeling that in this summer transfer window, we will see a similar process with the squad as Moyes looks to stamp his identity onto the team.
