Following bloody and violent scenes in Joinville last weekend, Atletico Paranaense and Vasco da Gama have been given 12 and eight-game bans respectively.
Violent clashes between Atletico Paranaense and Vasco da Gama fans on the final day of the Brasileirao season have seen the clubs handed huge penalties.

Atletico PR received a 12-game stadium ban and Vasco was given eight games, meaning they will have to play these games away from home, with half of them played behind closed doors. The bans will take effect from the start of the next campaign, a tribunal at the Brazil's Superior Court of Sports Justice ruled on Friday.

Atletico PR was also fined 120,000 reals [$51,500] while Vasco has been punished with a 80,000 reals [$34,300].

Both clubs have said they will appeal the verdict and a new trial has been set for Dec. 27.

Hundreds of fans were involved in violent and bloody scenes in Joinville, which left four people injured and a man airlifted to hospital, forcing the game to be suspended for 70 minutes. It has raised concerns over fans' safety with the World Cup only six months away.

Atletico PR was aiming for Copa Libertadores qualification while Vasco was attempting to avoid relegation.

Host Atletico PR, which was playing in temporary facilities while its own stadium is refurbished for the World Cup, won 5-1 once the game was eventually restarted, consigning the visitors to relegation.

Vasco attempted to have the match annulled because the delay was over maximum stoppage time of 60 minutes, but a tribunal ruled on Thursday that the result stands, meaning that the club is set to play second division football next season.

The tribunal also found that the referee and local federations were not to blame for the violence.
