Barca star Messi jets home to Argentina to step up recovery from thigh injury

Lionel Messi began the second phase of his recovery from injury on Monday by taking part in an individual session at Argentina's training complex in Buenos Aires.
The Barcelona star suffered a thigh strain during his side's 4-1 win against Real Betis on November 10, ruling him out of action until January.

But he is on course to meet his scheduled return date after flying to his native Argentina to continue a specially-designed programme aimed at getting him back to full fitness.

As well as running and agility drills, the Ballon d'Or challenger was also shown doing some work with a ball by Argentine broadcaster TyC Sports.

Club doctor Ricard Pruna and physio Elvio Paulorroso have joined him in South America to supervise the final phase of his recovery.
Last week a statement on www.fcbarcelona.com said of Messi: 'His development is positive as the latest tests conducted show.'

Barca boss Gerardo Martino will be keen to restore his compatriot to his starting XI as soon as possible after the Catalan giants suffered their first defeat of the La Liga season against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
Iker Muniain's strike was enough for the hosts, who caused the reigning champions to drop points for only the second time this season.
Messi could be back in time for the January 12 league game at in-form Atletico Madrid, who are second in the table behind Barca on goal difference.
