Ferguson to have road to Old Trafford named in his honour as former United boss receives Freedom of the Borough
Sir Alex Ferguson will be awarded the Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Trafford at a ceremony on Monday afternoon.
The local authority are also to rename a road leading to Old Trafford from Waters Reach to Sir Alex Ferguson Way.
The former Manchester United manager will be recognised for his achievements with the club between 1986 and 2013 - a period in which he won 38 trophies.
He will follow in the footsteps of another legendary United manager, Sir Matt Busby, who had the former Warwick Road North named in his honour in 1993.
Ferguson, 71, already has the former North Stand at Old Trafford named in his honour, with a bronze statue on display outside.
He also has the Freedom of the City of Glasgow.
At the time the Trafford honour was announced, Ferguson said: 'I am delighted to accept this honour from Trafford Council.
'When I arrived at Old Trafford in 1986 I had little idea of the journey that awaited me.
'Over a quarter of a century later, to receive the Freedom of the Borough of Trafford, and to have a part of Trafford carrying my name, is truly humbling.'
Leader of the Council, Cllr. Matt Colledge added: 'Sir Alex has contributed significantly to Trafford over a sustained period of time through his strong leadership of the Manchester United team and it was felt that the Honorary Freeman title and the renaming of the street was a fitting tribute to him.
'Football contributes significantly to the borough through the large number of visitors it attracts and jobs it creates.
'It has been through the success of the team that the club has grown in strength over the years, becoming one of the world's most successful and renowned clubs.'
