Wounded Wayne Rooney in shock return

The Manchester United striker has been sidelined since suffering a badly gashed forehead in a training ground collision on August 31.


David Moyes had originally ruled Rooney out for three weeks, but the United boss yesterday revealed: “It has healed really well, better than we thought. We will see what we can do.”

Rooney needed 12 stitches and missed United’s defeat at Liverpool and both England’s World Cup qualifiers.
His absence left Hodgson with a striker crisis but Rooney was so upset that people were questioning his commitment to England, he released a picture of his injury to prove how bad it was.

He was expected to be out until later this month but he returned to training on Wednesday following a short break in Portugal with his family.

Moyes has now revealed the 27-year-old could face Crystal Palace today.
Rooney will be assessed by the club’s medical staff before a decision is taken. And if he plays he could be told to wear a headband to protect the wound.

Moyes added: “It’s something we’ll look at. I’ve got to take the risk because you could knock the head and it could split open.”

The news will surprise Hodgson, who missed Rooney as the Three Lions laboured to a goalless draw in Ukraine.
