Burns ready to learn from mistakes
Ricky
Burns insists he will not make the same mistakes which almost cost him
his WBO lightweight title in May when he faces Raymundo Beltran on
Saturday.
Burns trailed Jose A Gonzalez on all
three of the judges’ scorecards before his opponent retired on his stool
with a hand injury before the beginning of the tenth round, but he
admits he will not have a similar approach to his latest encounter in
Glasgow.
“Trust me, the mistakes that were made
won’t happen again. During the fight from the start you could see I was
trying to force the fight, I was over-stretching, I was trying to put
everything into every punch and that is just not me,” Burns told Sky
Sports.
“I am a good boxer when I want to be,
but I know obviously I can get involved in a brawl if needs be as well
and I think on Saturday night we are going to take this a round at a
time.
“There are times when I am going to try
and go out and stick to my jab, keep it long, but there is always that
side to me that wants to get involved in a bit of a war. So who knows?
We will tackle it one round at a time.”
Burns also revealed he will need to be
at his best if he is to successfully defend his WBO title for a fourth
time against a boxer who has lost three of his last nine fights.
“Boxing is my job, that is the way I
have always looked at it. I don’t treat any fight any different, I
always give 100 per cent in the gym and I know I will be prepared for
whatever happens on the night,” the Scot said.
