Ex Spurs chairman: We should have been like Arsenal & Wenger…

Bale In Net
Tottenham Hotspur should have reinvested the cash received from the Gareth Bale deal more wisely.
Tottenham Hotspur sporting director Franco Baldini may be guilty of 'spending for the sake of spending' during the summer market as he was afforded the knowledge that there would be an imminent £86m windfall due to the pending world-record sale of star forward Gareth Bale.

That is according to former Spurs chairman Alan Sugar, 66, who bought the White Hart Lane club in 1991 in a reign that effectively lasted a decade.

Sugar has studied the players acquired in the summer… Erik Lamela for up to £30m, Roberto Soldado for £26m, Nacer Chadli for £7m - as examples - and implies that had the club's deal-makers been more patient with their transfer dealings then they could have secured greater talent, for a lesser budget.

'Daniel Levy did a very good deal with Bale,' he told talkSPORT. 'He was going, there was nothing he could do about it, and he has given Franco Baldini the money to go out and spend, but I wonder if it is just a case of spending for the sake of spending it.'

In a statement that may well rile the Lilywhite support, Sugar even said that Spurs should be looking at how neighbours Arsenal are recruiting (Mathieu Flamini on a free transfer and Mesut Ozil for £42.4m) if they want to replicate a successful model…
He concluded: 'Maybe we should have sat back a few moments and been a bit selective… like Arsene Wenger.'
Would Spurs have benefitted from adopting the Wenger model?
