Bad news for United, Chelsea and Spurs: Madrid star not for sale

Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that Fabio Coentrao will not be leaving the club in January, despite reported interest from the Premier League trio.

It is believed that Manchester United were very close to securing a loan deal for Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao over the summer transfer window, but the deal fell through at the last minute.

Tottenham have also been linked with the Portugal international as they look to solve their problem area on the left of their defence.
The most recent reports have even linked Chelsea with a move for Coentrao in January, with Jose Mourinho considering loaning his former player to cover a shortage of backup options to Ashley Cole at Stamford Bridge.

However, all speculation over Coentrao’s immediate future, with the January transfer window only a month away, has been put to one side by Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti.
The Italian trainer has claimed that the former Benfica defender will not be leaving the club in January, as Coentrao is very much in his plans going forward.
“I do not think he will leave,” the former PSG manager told reporters.


“Marcelo has started playing again, but only because Coentrao was injured.
“In the summer he asked the club if he could leave but we said no. Now he has not asked to leave.
“Coentrao has to now make a good recovery to be ready in January. It is a serious injury. We need to use the break to get him back.”

The news will not be of major concern to United or Chelsea. The Premier League champions only moved for Coentrao after it became evident that there pursuit of Leighton Baines was doomed to fail, with David Moyes likely to take up the task of signing the England international once more in January.

For Chelsea, the west London club have Cole returning from injury and Cesar Azpilicueta has played well out of position as his deputy.

The team that could suffer most is Spurs, who are need of a left-back more than the other two sides. Coentrao on loan would have been an excellent addition in January, but now Andre Villas-Boas will have to look elsewhere.
