The transfer window may be closed but work at Old Trafford continues to go on behind the scenes regarding new players.
David Moyes said over the summer that United have transfer plans in place for the next few years - and Hinteregger could be a target.
Scouts are monitoring the 21-year-old, who has been called up to Austria's senior squad although not featured yet.
Salzburg would demand a fee of around £6m for the centre-back, who has a contract with the Austrian side until 2017.
