Arsenal and Liverpool set to battle Juventus for Austrian defender Martin Hinteregger

ARSENAL and Liverpool are ready to battle Juventus for the signature of Red Bull Salzburg defender Martin Hinteregger.

The Austrian under-21 international has made a real impression for Salzburg becoming a regular fixture in their first-team since making his debut in 2010.

Hinteregger, 21, capped four times at under-21 level has featured nine times so far this season and according to the Liverpool Echo Brendan Rodgers is set to step up his efforts to land him.

Rodgers spent the summer adding to his defensive ranks sealing deals for Kolo Toure, Aly Cissokho, Tiago Ilori and Mamadou Sakho.

Despite these arrivals, the Reds boss is keen to add to his defence when the transfer window reopens in January.\

Liverpool will face competition from fellow Premier League side Arsenal, who have had a long-standing interest in Hinteregger.

Juventus are also monitoring the situation having watched Hinteregger in recent weeks in the Austrian Bundesliga, which is led by Salzburg.
