Wayne Rooney 2011
There are brilliant goals, and then there are slices of absolute genius. This was the latter.
Nani collected the ball on the right flank and crossed for Rooney.
The delivery looked to be behind the striker, but he somehow twisted his body in midair and fired a stunning overhead kick into the top corner.
The goal gave United a 2-1 win, and was recently voted the best goal in 20 years of the Premier League.
Quite rightly too.
Michael Owen 2009
In a quite astonishing game at Old Trafford, the score was 3-3 heading into injury time.
Wayne Rooney attempted to fire a free-kick into the box, but saw his effort cleared. Ever resilient, he chased down the loose ball and hooked it back into the area.
Again, it found a City head. However, the clearance was weak and only found Ryan Giggs.
The Welshman, showing superb composure and ageless guile, slipped Owen through on goal.
He took a touch and slotted the ball into the bottom corner – sending the United fans into raptures.
Shaun Goater 2002
The Bermudan striker had already embarrassed Gary Neville earlier in the game by robbing the right-back of possession and firing home to put City in front from an acute angle.
Yet he was far from finished.
The star latched onto a brilliant Eyal Berkovic pass and dispatched a sublime chip over Fabian Barthez to secure a 3-1 win for City in the final Manchester derby ever to be played at Maine Road.
Amazingly, it was also his 100th City goal.
Shaun Wright-Phillips 2004
The speedy winger added the icing on the cake for Manchester City in 2004, as they ran out 4-1 winners over Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.
Not content with running down the clock in the closing stages, Wright-Phillips surged down the right flank and, despite being faced with a near impossible angle, lashed a fierce effort past Tim Howard that crashed in off the underside of the bar.
A glorious goal.
Denis Law 1974
The day Manchester United were relegated. Yes, you read that right, relegated.
The Red Devils were already down due to Birmingham City’s win on the same day, but the match at Old Trafford was illuminated by Law’s exquisite back-heel.
The Scot may have been a United icon, but the goal also made him a legend for the blue half of the city.
He didn’t celebrate the goal, but many City fans still do!
