The Spanish giants brought in Gareth Bale at the start of the summer for a world-record transfer fee of £86 million, eclipsing the £80 million they paid Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.
The club also signed Isco and Asier Illarramendi during the transfer window and therefore wanted to offload players to make room for their new additions.
Ozil turned out to be the victim as he was allowed to join Arsenal on transfer deadline day with the Gunners breaking transfer record by paying £42.5 million for the German international.
Capello, who had two successful stints as Real Madrid manager, is bemused as to why his former club let the “quality” playmaker leave the club.
He told Bild am Sonntag: "I don't understand why Real Madrid sold Özil, he's quality.
"They [Arsenal] have made a great signing, even if he did cost €50m (£42.5 million)."
