Chelsea weekend round-up: Cole injury and Ba should not cause 'heart attack'
All the news and gossip from the past couple of days at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have beaten Norwich City 3-1 at Carrow Road.Chelsea started the match with Demba Ba in place of the benched Samuel Eto'o, while Eden Hazard was also left out of the starting XI.When Oscar put the visitors ahead after just four minutes, Mourinho's plan appeared to be working perfectly. But Anthony Pilkington's second-half equaliser put the result in question.
Belgian midfielder Eden Hazard came off the bench and put the Blues back in the lead with just five minutes of normal-time to go, and 60 seconds later the match was over, after Willian curled in a fantastic shot.
The result means Chelsea move up to third in the Premier League.
Ashley Cole will likely undergo a scan on a rib injury he carried into the game, which could leave him out of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers for England.
Mourinho addressed the situation after the game:
"Ashley Cole is having this little problem for a little while, but now he is hurt in the ribs. I didn't change him because of that. I changed him because of an option, but then I realised the situation. He's my concern because I want England to do well and my players to do well in the national team."
Demba Ba started the game and played well throughout, although Jose Mourinho feels he should have added a goal to his performance:
“I think he has to score in the first minute of the second half. It is an easy goal. Put the ball in, 2-0, we go home and there is no heart attack. He did what I was expecting Demba to do in this kind of match. It was very direct, a small pitch, very British. Demba is more physical and also for defensive set-pieces, he is tall to defend so he did his job.”
Nathan Ake inspired Chelsea to a 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Under-21 match between the two teams this afternoon.
Goals from John Swift and Andreas Christensen proved to be enough for victory - despite a goal from Jordi Hiwula.
Paris Saint-Germain are being linked with a renewed bid for Spanish international Juan Mata, who has had a difficult start to his career under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea.
It is said that the mega-rich French outfit are ready to spend £35 million on him.
Chelsea are ready to raid West Brom once again this winter for striking sensation Saido Berahino.
The England under-21 striker has been in superb form for The Baggies this season and is still on a youth contract - getting paid just £850-a-week at The Hawthorns.
Chelsea are being linked with a January move for Karim Benzema once again this morning. It is said that The Blues and Arsenal are ready to pay up to £17 million for the French international - who is out of favour after a poor start to the campaign with Los Blancos.
