Wayne Rooney has been named Manchester United player of the month for September by the fans.
He enjoyed a fantastic four week period
that included goals against Crystal Palace and Bayer Leverkusen to help
him become only the fourth United player to ever reach the 200 goal
milestone.
The 27-year-old has returned to his best so far this season and speaking to ManUtd.com, Rooney admitted it was great to simply be playing football again and wanted to thank the fans.
“It’s always nice to win any award and
for this one to be voted for by the fans is special and something I’m
very pleased about,” he said.
“I
was just pleased to be back playing last month. Just being back on the
pitch and playing has been great and it’s been nice to score a few goals
as well.
“I’d say my one against Crystal Palace
[was my favourite]. It was my first goal of the season, and it’s always
important to get that first goal as it gives you the belief to kick on
and score more.”
For a player who remained so silent
during the summer, Rooney has become very vocal again with his fan
interaction. He looks happy again and given his current form, so are the
fans.
He has played with that boyish hunger
that makes him insatiable at times and so long as he keeps up that sort
of commitment all season, he could be our best player this season.
Did he hand in a transfer request or
didn’t he? Ferguson reiterated this week that he did and his silence
during the summer, rather than denying he handed one in, suggests he did
but does that matter if he plays as well as he is right now?
