Adnan Januzaj’s father is furious after comments were made about his future
Adnan Januzaj’s father has reacted angrily to comments made by Belgium coach Marc Wilmots about the future of Januzaj in an interview with Rodrigo Beenkens, a Belgian journalist.
The 18-year-old’s representatives have
been very clear that he will not make a decision on his international
future until his club situation is sorted.
Despite that, Wilmots said that Belgium
would not get caught up in the ‘blackmail of players like Januzaj’,
which provoked a strong response from the Januzaj camp.
“I find this outrageous,” Januzaj’s father is quoted as saying in Voetbal Nieuws.
“We have never responded to selections, phone calls and faxes from the national team. They ask and not us.
“This has not made the decision really any easier to make. We are totally displeased with these bold statements.”
Belgium is convinced that Januzaj will
choose to represent them after they secured a spot in the 2014 World
Cup. Last week, Wilmots called Januzaj up to the senior squad but was
once again rebuffed by the youngster who remains focused on securing his
club future first.
They are underestimating the influence
of his father who has always had his heart set on his son playing for
Albania and these throwaway comments will have dampened their chances
even more.
The fact that Januzaj is currently going
through a European media storm regarding his international future is
likely to be a major factor in the delay of any deal with Manchester
United, but he is sticking to his guns that he will not be forced into a
decision by anyone else which is a strong move from Januzaj’s
representatives.
